Synopsis

The author, a Professor of History at the University of Malaya, recounts the story of one of the few popular civilian uprisings against the Japanese in Southeast Asia during World War II. What was particularly remarkable about the group known as the Kinabalu Guerillas, was that its membership was multiethnic, which set the tone for the relationship between different races in North Borneo, present day Sabah, for years to come.

Quote of The Day

"You think your pain and your heartbreak are unprecedented in the history of the world, but then you read. It was books that taught me that the things that tormented me most were the very things that connected me with all the people who were alive, who had ever been alive." – James Baldwin
