The International Children's Book Day (ICBD) is celebrated annually on 2nd April since 1967 in conjunction with the birthday of a classic children’s book author, Hans Christian Andersen to inspire others to read, as well as calling attention to children’s books. This day was founded by the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY). Every year, a different National Section of IBBY has the opportunity to be a sponsor of Children’s Book Day where the sponsor is able to choose a theme and invite prominent author from the host country to write a message to the children all across the world. Other than that, a well-known illustrator will also be chosen to design a poster for promotion of the event. This year, the sponsor for the International Children’s Book Day 2022 is IBBY Canada with the chosen theme, “Stories are wings that help you soar every day” by Richard Van Camp.

To celebrate International Children’s Book Day, you do not need to be associated with the IBBY. Simply reading a book with your child is the perfect way for you to get involved in this day! Reading opens up children to new horizons that includes fostering imagination and empathy. Don’t forget to applaud and hug them for successfully reading out loud as this will definitely boosts their confidence for future improvement.
