1953 | The first state library in Sabah was established as a section of the Broadcasting and Information Department. |

1966 | The library merged with the Sabah Museum to form the Libraries and Museum Department. |
1972 | The Library and Sabah Museum was separated and the Library Department was formed. The Library Department was administered under the Ministry of Social Welfare. |
1976 | The administration of this department was passed to the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports and its name was changed to 'Sabah State Library'. |
1982 | Jurisdiction of the state library was once again handed over to the Ministry of Social Services. |
1987 | The Sabah State Library moved into the computer technology era. |
1988 | 1) URICA, the computerised library system of the Sabah State Library was launched officially by the Yang Berhormat Datuk Ariah Tengku Ahmad, Minister of Social Services. |
2) The Sabah State Library Enactment was passed at the State Legislative Assembly. The Act empowers the State Library to prosecute any offender who violates library rules and regulations. | |
1990 | OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue) was launched by the late Yang Berhormat Datuk Jawawi Haji Isa, Assistant Minister of Social Services. |
1993 | Sandakan Regional Library was officially opened on the 21st December 1993 by YAB Datuk Joseph Pairin Kitingan, Chief Minister of Sabah. |
1994 | Another regional library - Tawau Regional Library was officially opened on the 16th February 1994 by the Chief Minister YAB Datuk Joseph Pairin Kitingan. |
1995 | 1) Internet Service was introduced to the public. |
2) Keningau Regional Library was officially opened by Yang Berhormat Datuk Seri Panglima Joseph Kurup, Deputy Chief Minister cum Minister of Industrial Development on the 30th October 1995. |
