Jane finds it easy to love Duncan. He is charming, nice, and good-looking, but he has slept with almost every woman in Boyne City, Michigan. Jane sees Duncan's old girlfriends everywhere: in restaurants, at the grocery store, and even three towns away.
Jane might be able to deal with dating the man who has been with the most women in the world, but she wishes she didn't have to share him with so many other women. Aggie, his ex-wife, still has Duncan mow her lawn. Aggie has shiny hair and pale skin like a milkmaid. Jimmy, a person he works with, comes and goes from Duncan's apartment at the worst times. Jane sometimes wonders if a relationship with three people can even work, let alone with four. If you count Gary, Aggie's strange husband, then there are five. Not to mention all the other people in Boyne City who freely tell Jane what they think about the choices she makes.
