Meet Mahmud Jahar 

About Mahmud Jahar

Mahmud Jahar is a retired teacher born in Sandakan on April 11, 1950.

He has been interested in writing POETRY since 1968. His works are often featured in local Sabah newspapers such as New Sabah Times, Daily Express, Utusan Borneo, and mainstream newspapers like Berita Mingguan, including literary magazines Dewan Sastera and Majalah Wanita.

Throughout his career, he has received various awards, including the Prolific Sandakan Writer in 1983 from the Language and Literature Bureau Sabah Branch. He is also among the winners of poetry writing competitions organized by the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) and the Sabah Language and Literature Bureau (BAHASA) for July 2018, 2019, and 2020. He continues to actively write and has been selected twice as the best writer in the SUNTIK event in Sabah, in collaboration with the Language and Literature Bureau Sabah during the 2017/2018 period.

In addition, he received the Sabah Veteran Writer Award in 2020 and the Arts and Literature Award in conjunction with the National Elderly Day organized by the Sabah State Education Department.

Mahmud has also participated in more than 10 poetry anthologies with other writers, including the poetry anthology "Malaysia Dalam Puisi" and "Perkasihan Musim," and has published two collections of his own poems titled "Sandakan" and "DIA" in 2020. Currently, he is still a member of the Sabah Language and Literature Bureau (BAHASA).
