World AIDS Day is held on 1st December every year since 1988, making this year its 30th anniversary. It is to raise the awareness of HIV, to remember loved ones who have died, to show solidarity with people living with HIV, to celebrate survival and health, and to raise money for HIV and related causes.

Did you know that based on the report by UNAIDS, 9.4 million people aren’t aware that they’re HIV positive? Thus, this year’s theme encourages people to go to the doctors and get a blood test to know their status, as those who are infected aren’t aware of it and unknowingly spread the disease further from unprotected sex. Like other conditions, HIV can be prevented and people with HIV can lead long and healthy lives, with a similar life expectancy to a person who does not have HIV. By being informed about what HIV is and how it can be transmitted, we can take measures to look after ourselves and others.

So take the first step - inform yourself about HIV. Then, wear a red ribbon on World Aids Day to show solidarity and to increase HIV awareness around the world. Check out the links below to know more about HIV and what you can do on World Aids Day.
