Meet Witer Gunik

Place of birth: Kg. Marakau, Ranau.

About Witer Gunik

Born on 23rd of May,1969 in Kampung Maraku, Ranau. He attended school at Sk. Marakau (1975-1980) SMK Mat Salleh Ranau (1981-1987). In 1991-1993, he attended teacher training at Gaya Teachers College, Kota Kinabalu. He continued his studies at Universiti Putra Malaysia (1998-2001) and earned bachelor in the field of Malay Language & Linguistics/ Writing & Journalism. In 2009-2011, he studied for a Master's degree in Educational Management at Universiti Utara Malaysia.

His short stories in short story group have been published in Borneo Mail, The New sabah Times, Dewan Sastera and Dewan Budaya. He won the Sabah Literature 2000/2001 prize in the short story category in Malay. One of his short stories, "Tagung", was collected in the Madu Ilmu short story group which was selected as a textbook for Malay literature subjects at the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia level starting in 2010.

Apart from writing, he is also interested in the field of art and has been a contributor of illustration for short stories published in the Borneo Mail newspaper (1991-1994). He has produced the first novel in the Kadazan Dusun language, Songgorib (Pena Magis, Publishing, 2013) which will be translated into Malay.
