Introduction

Sandakan Branch Library was officially opened by Yang Amat Berhormat Datuk Joseph Pairin Kitingan on the 21st December 1993. However, library services to the public commenced earlier on 26th April 1993.A colourful mural that overlooks the foyer greets visitors as they enter the building. The mural portrays a variety of rainforest wildlife including the rare Sumatran Rhinoceros and the Orang Utan for which there is a state-run sanctuary about 24 kilometers away.

Familiar cartoon characters grace the walls of the children's area to create a bright atmosphere for the children. There is easy access into and within the building with complete ramps and a lift for physically  impaired users.  This library is also equipped with a multi-purpose room, canteen, discussion rooms and a storytelling room.

In September 1997, the VIP (Visually Impaired Persons) Service was officially started here and is managed by the Audio Visual Section.  This section also prepares and sends "talking books" to Taman Cahaya residents.Mobile Library service to 48 schools and various government departments operates from this regional library.
